Scottish Premiership Dominates European Football Attendance Charts Again

The Scottish Premiership continues to lead Europe in per capita football match attendance, showcasing the unmatched passion of Scottish football fans.

For the third consecutive year, the Scottish Premiership has topped the European attendance charts, as reported by the SPFL. According to Uefa's latest European Club Talent and Competition Landscape report, the league saw an impressive 18.5 attendees per 1,000 people last season, marking a 5% increase from the previous campaign. This figure is 70% higher than any other league in Europe.

Key Highlights from the Report:

  • Portugal's Primeira Liga follows in second place with 10.7 attendees per 1,000 people.
  • Netherlands' Eredivisie ranks third with 9.77 attendees per 1,000 people.
  • England's Premier League recorded 6.97 attendees per 1,000 people.

Last season, around 3.9 million fans attended top-flight matches in Scotland, placing it eighth in Europe for total attendance. The average league attendance of 17,303 is the seventh highest on the continent.

SPFL Group Chief Executive Neil Doncaster commented: "It's fantastic to see that the SPFL William Hill Premiership continues to lead Europe by some distance in attendances per capita. The passion of Scottish football supporters across the SPFL's four divisions is rightly renowned, and they deserve enormous credit for their phenomenal commitment to our national game."

Scottish football attendances have consistently exceeded expectations for many years. Following three record-breaking seasons, the SPFL aims to build on this momentum throughout the current season. Last season, a record total of 5,336,353 attended SPFL matches, an increase of 185,000 from the previous season.
