Ilkay Gundogan Joins Galatasaray: A New Chapter in Turkish Football
Ilkay Gundogan, the seasoned German midfielder, has signed with Galatasaray, marking a significant addition to the Turkish champions.

Galatasaray have secured the services of Ilkay Gundogan, the experienced German midfielder, on a free transfer from Manchester City. The 34-year-old has committed to a deal that will see him through the end of the 2026-27 season with the Turkish champions.
Gundogan, who had a year remaining on his contract with City, was allowed to leave as the Turkish transfer window remains open until 12 September. Reflecting on his time at Manchester City, Gundogan expressed deep gratitude: "Manchester City will always hold a special place in my heart. We have enjoyed so much success in our time together and there have been so many unforgettable moments, not least being captain for the Treble-winning season."
During his tenure at City, Gundogan made 358 appearances, scoring 65 goals. His contributions were pivotal in securing five Premier League titles and the Champions League in the 2022-23 season. His last-gasp double to seal the Premier League title in 2022 remains etched in the memories of City fans.
Gundogan's journey in football began in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, to Turkish parents. He has previously played for Bochum, Nuremberg, and Borussia Dortmund before joining Manchester City in 2016 as Pep Guardiola's first signing. After a brief stint with Barcelona in 2023, he returned to City in August 2024, making 33 appearances in the Premier League last season.
City's director of football, Hugo Viana, acknowledged Gundogan's legacy: "Ilkay Gundogan is a name synonymous with success at Manchester City. We will never forget his legacy here."
With his move to Galatasaray, Gundogan returns to a club he reportedly supported as a child. His arrival is expected to bolster Galatasaray's midfield as they aim for domestic and European success. Fans eagerly anticipate his return to the Etihad Stadium in January when Galatasaray faces City in the Champions League group phase.
This transfer marks a new chapter for Gundogan, who continues to inspire with his dedication and skill on the pitch.
