Ruben Selles Confident Despite Sheffield United's Worst Start in 30 Years

Sheffield United's head coach Ruben Selles remains confident despite the team's worst start to the season in 30 years, backed by the club's owners.

Sheffield United head coach Ruben Selles has expressed his confidence in turning around the team's fortunes despite their worst start to a season in 30 years. The Blades have lost all six games under Selles and currently sit at the bottom of the Championship. Their recent 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road, where Jaden Philogene scored a hat-trick, marked a new low in their season.

Selles, 42, remains optimistic and believes there are positives to take from the performance. "If you don't win football matches your position is going to be discussed, not only for me but for every coach in the world. We have to keep working hard until the end," he told Sky Sports. He also emphasized the support he has received from the club's owners, stating, "The owners have been supporting me until today. I haven't spoken to them after the game. I'm not worried about that, I'm just worried about how we can do things better."

Despite the challenging start, Selles remains focused on improving the team's performance. "I believe in myself. I will always be in front of anything that has my name. We are not going to solve anything tonight but we have to analyse. The good thing about football is you have another game in seven days and it's another opportunity," he added.

The statistics paint a grim picture for Sheffield United. They have conceded 12 goals in their five Championship games, the most in the division. Their only goal this season came from Tyreese Campbell in a 4-1 home defeat by Bristol City on the opening day. Historically, since the Championship was rebranded in 2004-05, only four teams have lost five matches in a row to start a season, with only Sheffield Wednesday managing to survive relegation.

Sheffield United's current form is their worst start since the 1995-96 season, when manager Dave Bassett was replaced by Howard Kendall in December. The club eventually recovered to finish ninth in the second tier. Selles is determined to avoid a similar fate and is focused on turning the team's fortunes around.
