Sam Hutchinson Secures New One-Year Deal with AFC Wimbledon After Overcoming Heart Attack

AFC Wimbledon midfielder Sam Hutchinson signs a one-year contract extension after recovering from a heart attack during a match last season.

AFC Wimbledon midfielder Sam Hutchinson has signed a one-year contract extension, less than two months after suffering a heart attack while playing for the club. The 35-year-old, who played the entire match and scored the winner in the Wombles' 1-0 victory over Grimsby Town in May, experienced the health issue in the sixth minute of the game.

Hutchinson underwent surgery and missed the remainder of the season as Wimbledon went on to win the League Two play-off final against Walsall at Wembley. The former Chelsea, Sheffield Wednesday, and Reading player initially joined Johnnie Jackson's side on a one-month deal in December, which was later extended to the end of the season in January. He has made 18 appearances for the club so far.

"I'm delighted to sign again. From the moment I got here everyone has made me feel so welcome - it's a proper football club," Hutchinson told Wimbledon's website. "A special thank you to everyone who has looked after me with what went on at the end of last year. I can't wait to just crack on now and have a great season."

Hutchinson's journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Despite the serious health scare, he has shown remarkable resilience and determination to continue his football career. His return to the pitch is a testament to his passion for the game and the support he has received from the club and its fans.

This new contract not only highlights Hutchinson's value to the team but also underscores AFC Wimbledon's commitment to supporting their players through challenging times. As the team prepares for the upcoming League One season, Hutchinson's experience and leadership will be crucial in their quest for success.
