Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw Returns to Manchester City Training Amid Racist Abuse Scandal

Manchester City's Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw resumes training after facing racist and misogynistic abuse, with the club pledging full support.

Manchester City's star forward, Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw, has returned to training following a distressing period of racist and misogynistic abuse. The Jamaican international, who joined City from Bordeaux in 2021, recently made her 100th appearance for the club. Shaw withdrew from City's League Cup semi-final against Arsenal to safeguard her mental health after the appalling treatment she endured following a 4-3 defeat to the Gunners on February 2.

Club Support and Manager's Statement Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor confirmed Shaw's return to training and emphasized the club's commitment to supporting her. "Bunny is back with us," Taylor stated. "She is OK and trained with the team, which is good. I have spoken to her, but respectfully, I don't want to share the details. There is a caring side with the club. The level of support looks different for each person, but we will support Bunny in the right way."

Investigation and Broader Issues City has shared the abusive content with relevant authorities, and an investigation is underway. This incident highlights the broader issue of racism and misogyny in football, which has increasingly affected female players. Last weekend, Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor condemned the verbal abuse suffered by skipper Millie Bright after a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.

Taylor's Condemnation Taylor expressed his dismay at the situation, stating, "We really don't see any place for this to be in any walk of life, not just a game of football. It's not acceptable. It never will be, and it never should be. It's a horrendous situation for any person to have to deal with. We won't stand for it."

Looking Forward Taylor also addressed the challenges of combating such abuse, noting, "Unfortunately, at the moment, it seems there is a platform for certain people to be able to come forward with those comments. How do you deal with that? I really don't know. What I care about is the players. We really care about Bunny Shaw in particular and we really care about every player we have at this club."
