Wrexham midfielder George Thomason has confidently stated that the club is not merely participating in the Championship to make up the numbers. After a remarkable journey that saw them secure a third successive automatic promotion, Wrexham is back in English football's second tier for the first time in 43 years.

Thomason, who joined Wrexham from Bolton Wanderers on a three-year deal, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season. "We're not just here to make numbers up - we're here to win football matches," he told BBC Sport Wales. The club is set to open their campaign at Southampton next Saturday.

The 24-year-old midfielder highlighted the team's resilience and winning culture. "Each time they've been promoted they've had questions asked of them, can they go again? And they have," he said. Thomason also praised the club's rapid rise from the National League to competing against teams like Southampton, West Brom, and Leicester.

Under the management of Phil Parkinson, Wrexham has made seven new signings during the close season. Thomason, who scored 13 goals in 169 appearances for Bolton, was easily convinced to join the north Wales club, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

"He's a manager that's been around the game for many, many years, and as I keep alluding to he's been very successful," Thomason added. "He didn't have to sell me too much on what the club's all about."

Thomason also mentioned the club's ambition and culture, which align with his personal goals. "From the outside looking in and stuff it's been a real successful club on and off the pitch and they've shown real ambition," he said. "So, it's exciting to join right now - it's an exciting time to be part of the football club."
