Everton's Transfer Strategy: Bidding for Aznou and the Quest for Six More Signings

Everton's manager David Moyes discusses the club's bid for Bayern Munich's Adam Aznou and the need for six more signings to strengthen the squad.

Everton have made a significant move in the transfer market by bidding for Bayern Munich's teenage defender, Adam Aznou. However, manager David Moyes has emphasized that the club still needs up to six more signings before the transfer window closes.

Injury Woes and Defensive Struggles The absence of central defenders James Tarkowski and Jarrod Branthwaite due to injuries has left Everton vulnerable. This was evident in their recent 3-0 loss to Bournemouth at the MetLife Stadium, where they conceded three second-half goals.

Moyes' Assessment Moyes had previously stated at an event in New York that he needed "nine or 10" new signings. Following the defeat to Bournemouth, he clarified his position, stating, "Well, we've signed three, so if you take that off, we're still in need of maybe five or six players. That's what we have to try and do."

Current Signings and Departures Everton have already secured the services of goalkeeper Mark Travers, made midfielder Carlos Alcaraz's loan move permanent, and signed French striker Thierno Barry for £27m. However, they have lost five senior players, including striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Mali midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, whose contracts expired.

Branthwaite's New Contract Among the positive developments, Jarrod Branthwaite is one of four squad members to sign new contracts this summer. Moyes expressed optimism about the club's efforts behind the scenes, saying, "We're trying really hard behind the scenes to get things done."

Adam Aznou's Potential Aznou, a Morocco international, joined Bayern Munich's academy at 16 after leaving his birthplace, Barcelona. The left-back has made four appearances for Bayern and spent the latter half of last season on loan at Spanish side Real Valladolid. Moyes confirmed the offer for Aznou but tempered expectations, stating, "We have made an offer. Whether it's accepted and whether it's all done... but he's a young player. It's someone we see as having a good future and good potential."

Looking Ahead As the transfer window progresses, Everton's strategy under Moyes will be crucial in addressing the squad's deficiencies and improving their performance in the Premier League.
