Savannah Marshall Eyes Blockbuster Rematch with Claressa Shields After Recent Setback
Savannah Marshall remains determined to secure a high-profile rematch with Claressa Shields despite her recent loss to Shadasia Green.

Savannah Marshall, the English super-middleweight boxer, is not ready to hang up her gloves just yet. Despite a recent split decision loss to Shadasia Green in New York, Marshall is still eyeing a rematch with American superstar Claressa Shields. This potential bout could be one of the biggest in women's boxing, especially with Netflix now broadcasting fights.
Marshall, 34, had not stepped into the ring for two years before her loss to Green. This defeat was only the second in her professional career, the first being a points loss to Shields in a middleweight world title unification bout in 2022. Since then, Marshall has been chasing a rematch with Shields, who remains unbeaten and now holds the heavyweight title.
However, Marshall acknowledges that her loss to Green might have jeopardized her chances of securing the rematch with Shields. Green, who now holds the super-middleweight title, could be the next opponent for Shields. Despite this, Marshall believes that a rematch with Shields would still be a lucrative and exciting event.
"My fight with Claressa is 10 times as big as Claressa versus Shadasia Green," Marshall told BBC Radio Tees. "I just want that Claressa rematch. I really do."
Marshall also mentioned the possibility of a rematch with Green, which could give her another shot at becoming a world champion. However, there was no rematch clause in the deal for the Green fight, as Marshall was confident she would win.
"There's two fights out there for me at the minute," she added. "There's the rematch with Shadasia and I think that the Claressa rematch is still there. I've waited two and a half years, coming up on three years, for that rematch."
Marshall was visibly disappointed with the judges' decision in her fight against Green. She revealed that she had concerns about all three judges being from the United States before the fight.
"It was flagged up the day before in the rules meeting," she said. "My manager (Mick Hennessy) wasn't happy about it and he was told 'Look, don't worry, it's live on Netflix and the last thing we want is controversy.' I feel like I was very hard done by. I'm going to America, we've got three American judges and I'm fighting an American. I'm gutted. But look, it's boxing."
Despite the setback, Marshall has no plans to retire. She remains committed to her boxing career and is determined to continue fighting.
"I remember my first amateur coach saying to me 'You will wake up one day and you just won't want to do it any more,'" she said. "But this is the train I'm on at the minute. It hasn't stopped yet."
Marshall's resilience and determination make her a compelling figure in the world of boxing. Fans will undoubtedly be eager to see what the future holds for this tenacious fighter.
