The Gladiator Mentality: Pierre Schoeman’s Journey from South Africa to the British & Irish Lions

Pierre Schoeman shares his unique perspective on the prop mentality, his journey from South Africa to Scotland, and his experiences with the British & Irish Lions.

Pierre Schoeman, the Scottish loosehead prop, has always been a man of adventure and humor. From his early days in South Africa to his current role with the British & Irish Lions, Schoeman’s journey is as unique as his personality.

The Adventurous Spirit

Schoeman’s adventurous spirit was evident even in his youth. At the age of 13, he went cage diving to get a closer look at great white sharks. "I climbed down the ladder of the boat and I saw this shark going past and he was looking at me and I had to be strong not to wet myself," he recalls with a smile. This early encounter with danger perhaps foreshadowed his fearless approach to rugby.

The Viking Mentality

Schoeman often draws parallels between rugby players and Vikings. "We are like bison, migrating together," he says, describing the camaraderie among the Lions’ props. Every night, the props have a secret meeting, a tradition started by Finlay Bealham. These meetings are a time for bonding, sharing personal stories, and discussing deep questions.

The Role of a Loosehead Prop

Schoeman has a unique perspective on what it means to be a loosehead prop. "I think looseheads around the globe are quite weird people," he says with a straight face. "Something isn’t right. We always say, his screw must be loose, but playing rugby as a loosehead prop." He compares the role to that of a gladiator, always ready to go to dark places, both physically and mentally.

The Bond with Fellow Props

Despite the intense competition for a spot in the Test team, Schoeman has formed strong bonds with his fellow props, Ellis Genge and Andrew Porter. "We’re rivals, but now friends, even in the heat of battle for Test match places," he says. This camaraderie is a testament to the spirit of the Lions tours, where friendships are forged that last a lifetime.

A Love Letter to His Wife

Schoeman’s journey would not have been possible without the support of his wife, Charissa. "We packed up two suitcases and left," he says, recalling their move from South Africa to Scotland. "It’s almost like Vikings burning a ship, you know. Me and her packed a Viking ship, left for the shores of Scotland, for the British & Irish Lions, for the dream which became a reality." To thank her for her unwavering support, Schoeman bought her a watch, a symbol of the time she has invested in him.

The Legacy of the Lions

Schoeman is acutely aware of the legacy of the British & Irish Lions. He speaks with reverence about past Lions like Ian ‘Mighty Mouse’ McLauchlan and Tom Smith. "That’s what the jersey demands of us," he says. "That’s the legacy of it. I have sat on the same seat as Tom did at Murrayfield. I’ve been honoured and blessed."

Pierre Schoeman’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, camaraderie, and a touch of humor. Whether or not he makes the Test team, he has already left an indelible mark on this Lions tour.
