Nigeria's Super Falcons Aim for Historic 10th Wafcon Victory in Morocco

Nigeria's Super Falcons are set to reclaim their dominance in African football as they eye a historic 10th Wafcon title in Morocco. With a mix of youth and experience, the team is ready to face tough competition.

As record nine-time Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) champions, Nigeria's Super Falcons are poised to make history once again. The team, which has dominated African women's football for decades, is aiming for a historic 10th Wafcon title in Morocco. Interim head coach Justin Madugu, who took over from Randy Waldrum in September, is confident in the team's potential. 'Looking at the potential that abounds in the country, I can tell you we are ready,' Madugu told BBC Sport Africa. 'Our objective is to win the trophy and come back to Nigeria with it.'

The Super Falcons have a rich history in Wafcon, having won nine titles since the tournament's inception in 1991. However, their dominance has been challenged in recent years, with the team finishing fourth in the 2022 edition. This year, the squad includes a blend of youth and experience, with stars like Asisat Oshoala, Francisca Ordega, and Chiamaka Nnadozie leading the charge. 'Everyone wants this title back,' Ordega said. 'Most of these girls have not played Wafcon before, and I think they really want to win.'

Nigeria's campaign, dubbed 'Mission X,' will begin with group stage matches against Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. The team has been preparing with friendly matches, including a 3-1 victory over Ghana. Despite their strong lineup, the Super Falcons face challenges off the field, including disputes over unpaid bonuses and administrative issues. 'It's left to us to do what we know how to do best,' Nnadozie said. 'We'll go to Morocco to work hard and try to bring back the trophy to Nigeria.'

Victory in Morocco would not only mark a return to the summit of African football but also serve as a unifying moment for millions of Nigerians. The Super Falcons are determined to reclaim their legacy and make their country proud.
