Ann Budge's Legacy: A New Era for Heart of Midlothian as Chair Steps Down

Ann Budge, the saviour of Heart of Midlothian, announces her departure as chairperson, marking the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for the club.

Ann Budge, the chairperson of Heart of Midlothian, has announced her decision to step down at the club's annual meeting in December. Budge, a 77-year-old Edinburgh-born entrepreneur, has been instrumental in rescuing the club from administration since taking over in 2014.

A Legacy of Stability and Growth

Budge's tenure has been marked by significant achievements, including financial stabilization and strategic growth. Her leadership saw the club recover from the brink of collapse, thanks to her successful acquisition of the majority shareholding from administrators. This move was crucial in alleviating the massive debts left by former owner Vladimir Romanov.

The Foundation of Hearts

Gerry Mallon, chairman of the Foundation of Hearts, praised Budge for her pivotal role in saving the club. "Ann will leave a remarkable legacy," Mallon stated. "Her efforts, alongside the fans, have been instrumental in taking the club back to the top end of Scottish football."

New Investments and Future Prospects

Budge's recent success includes securing a near £10m investment from Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom. This investment has not only strengthened the club's financial position but also brought in new opportunities for growth. Budge expressed her pride in the club's current standing, stating, "Now, 12 years later, as I look at where the club stands, I can allow myself to feel a sense of pride at what we have achieved."

The Search for a New Leader

With Budge's departure, the search for a new chairperson is underway. The club remains optimistic about its future, with a solid foundation laid by Budge's leadership. Hearts chief executive Andrew McKinlay expressed his gratitude, saying, "It cannot be overstated just how much Ann has done for Heart of Midlothian."

On the Pitch

Despite finishing seventh last season, Hearts have appointed Derek McInnes as their new head coach, signaling a fresh start. The club continues to enjoy strong support from its fans, with regular sell-out matches at Tynecastle.

Off the Pitch

Budge's influence extends beyond the pitch, with the development of a hotel within the stadium grounds and attracting wealthy philanthropists to invest in the club. Her legacy is one of resilience, vision, and unwavering dedication to Heart of Midlothian.
