Nahki Wells Departs Bristol City: A Legacy of Goals and Leadership

Nahki Wells leaves Bristol City after five and a half years, reflecting on his impactful journey and contributions to the club.

Bristol City has officially announced that forward Nahki Wells will be leaving the club this summer after a significant five-and-a-half-year tenure. Wells, whose contract had expired, was in discussions for a new deal but has decided to move on. The 35-year-old made 237 appearances for the Robins, scoring 48 goals, including 10 in the 2024-25 season, which saw the club secure a Championship play-off spot for the first time since 2008.

In a heartfelt club statement, Wells expressed his gratitude: "We've created so many special memories that will live with me forever. You've taken me in as one of your own and made my family feel at home from the moment I joined the club. The moment on the pitch at Ashton Gate finding out we'd made the play-off places is something I will never forget, celebrating something we worked so hard to achieve with the fans who backed us the whole way."

Wells joined Bristol City from Burnley in January 2020 for £5 million and has been a consistent presence in their front line under various managers, including Lee Johnson, Dean Holden, Nigel Pearson, and most recently Liam Manning. Manning, who left to become Norwich head coach in March, had previously expressed hope that Wells would extend his stay after a "fantastic season."

This season, the Bermuda international was the only player in the squad over the age of 30, and his departure comes just four days after Gerhard Struber was appointed as the new head coach. Bristol City chairman Jon Lansdown praised Wells for his contributions: "I'd like to thank Nahki for everything he has given to Bristol City in his time here. He has been an exceptional role model on and off the pitch, contributing significantly both to the first team and to the development of a number of our young players, and also helping the Robins Foundation to make a difference in our community."

Wells' departure marks the end of an era for Bristol City, as they look to build on their recent success and continue their upward trajectory in the Championship.
