London Aims to Host the 2029 World Athletics Championships: A £400M Economic Boost

London is bidding to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships, promising a £400M economic boost and showcasing the city's global sports leadership.

London is set to bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships following a feasibility study that predicts a £400 million boost to the economy. Athletic Ventures, a consortium including UK Athletics, the Great Run Company, and London Marathon Events, is spearheading this initiative to bring the prestigious event back to the capital.

Having successfully hosted the World Championships in 2017, London is no stranger to large-scale athletic events. The city's experience and infrastructure, particularly the iconic London Stadium, make it a strong contender for 2029. This bid also follows Birmingham's upcoming hosting of the European Athletics Championships in 2026, highlighting the UK's commitment to major sports events.

A formal expression of interest will be submitted to World Athletics in September, contingent on securing £45 million in government support. Dame Denise Lewis, UK Athletics president and Olympic gold medallist, expressed her enthusiasm: "London 2017 demonstrated our capability to unite behind a vision, with full stadiums, global energy, and lasting impact. We can replicate this success in 2029."

Global sporting events like the World Athletics Championships do more than just award medals; they stimulate economies, inspire communities, and showcase a nation's strengths. This year's championships are in Tokyo, Japan, with Beijing set to host in 2027. London's bid for 2029 aims to continue this legacy of excellence and economic vitality.
