Saracens to Rest Key Players for European Clash

Saracens have confirmed they will rest their England internationals for the Champions Cup last-16 trip to Toulon on Saturday, as director of rugby Mark McCall prioritizes securing a spot in the Premiership play-offs over European glory.

Player Rotation Strategy

Key stars such as Maro Itoje, Jamie George, Ben Earl, and Elliot Daly will be absent from the squad as they undergo a mandatory rest period following the Six Nations campaign. McCall emphasized the necessity of player recovery, stating,

"We think it's unwise not to rest them. They have to do it in one of the three games after the Six Nations, so we decided to focus on the Premiership."

Despite fielding a strong side in their recent 29-22 victory over Leicester, Saracens will now rotate their squad for the trip to France.

Tough European Draw & Future Fixtures

A potential victory in Toulon could set up a quarter-final clash against Toulouse, should the French giants overcome Sale Sharks. However, McCall remains pragmatic, acknowledging the challenges of competing on multiple fronts.

"We made this decision halfway through the Six Nations. After losing to Castres, we got the difficult side of the draw, so we’re being realistic about our priorities."

Squad Depth and Tactical Approach

While resting key players, Saracens won’t field an inexperienced lineup.

"We’ll send our best available team—not a pack of 18-year-olds—but we’ll give it a proper crack with nothing to lose."
