Paula Badosa Withdraws from US Open Due to Persistent Back Injury

Former top-10 player Paula Badosa withdraws from the US Open due to a back injury sustained since Wimbledon, impacting her participation in this year's final Grand Slam.

NEW YORK -- In a disappointing turn of events for tennis fans, former top-10 player Paula Badosa has officially withdrawn from the US Open. The announcement came on Friday, citing a persistent back injury that has kept her off the court since her first-round loss at Wimbledon on June 30.

The U.S. Tennis Association confirmed Badosa's withdrawal and announced that Jil Teichmann will take her place in the tournament. Additionally, Alizé Cornet, who retired in 2024 but made a comeback this year, is next in line to secure a spot in the draw at Flushing Meadows if another player withdraws.

Badosa, a 27-year-old from Spain, has had a remarkable career, reaching a career-high ranking of No. 2 in 2022. She is currently ranked No. 12. Her recent achievements include reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open in January and making it to the quarterfinals at last year's US Open.

The US Open, the year's final Grand Slam tournament, is scheduled to begin on August 24 in the singles brackets. Badosa's absence will undoubtedly be felt, as she has been a consistent and formidable presence on the tour.
