T.J. Watt's Strategic Shift: Maximizing Defensive Impact by Alternating Pass Rush Sides

Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt plans to alternate his pass rush approach to maximize defensive mismatches and enhance team versatility.

LATROBE, Pa. -- In a bid to elevate his game and provide the Pittsburgh Steelers with a more versatile defensive edge, T.J. Watt is embracing a strategic shift in his pass rush approach. Known predominantly for his prowess on the left side, the 2021 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is now focusing on perfecting his skills from both the left and right sides during training camp.

A New Approach for a Veteran Player Watt, who turned 31 on October 11, is entering his ninth year in the NFL. Recognizing the need to adapt, he has decided to vary his pass rush locations. This change is not just about personal growth but also about enhancing the team's defensive schemes. "I prefer the left, but at this point in my career, I want to be an impact player," Watt stated. "I don't want to be schemed out of games. I want to be able to deliver the football in good field positions or take the football away."

Training Camp Focus During training camp in Latrobe, Watt has been diligently working on his pass rush from both sides. He believes that this time of year is perfect for experimenting and getting comfortable with new positions. "It's not about winning every single rep and having to be on the left side and having to get everything mastered on the left side," Watt explained. "It's about trying new things and moving around."

Historical Context and Future Plans Since being drafted 30th overall by the Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft, Watt has predominantly played on the left side, amassing 4,887 snaps compared to just 653 on the right. However, his limited snaps on the right side during his rookie season yielded significant results, with five of his seven sacks coming from that position. The Steelers plan to incorporate more of these versatile packages in the upcoming season to keep opposing offenses guessing.

Impact on the Team Watt's willingness to adapt is expected to benefit the entire Steelers' defense. By moving him around, the team aims to create more opportunities for other pass rushers and disrupt offensive game plans. "We're all trying to be as versatile as we can be," said rookie pass rusher Jack Sawyer. "Playing both sides of the ball so teams can't game plan for the best player in the league definitely will help him, and obviously helps us too."

Looking Ahead As the Steelers prepare for the regular season, the exact details of how Watt's versatility will be utilized remain under wraps. Fellow pass rusher Nick Herbig hinted at the strategic advantage this could provide, stating, "I can't give you the sauce, man." One thing is certain: T.J. Watt's strategic shift is poised to make a significant impact on the Steelers' defensive performance in the 2025 NFL season.
