USC Freshman Alijah Arenas Suffers Knee Injury, Out for 6-8 Months

USC freshman Alijah Arenas, a top ESPN 100 recruit, will miss 6-8 months due to a knee injury requiring surgery.

USC freshman basketball player Alijah Arenas, a highly-touted recruit ranked No. 13 in the ESPN 100, will be sidelined for six to eight months following a knee injury that necessitates surgery. The university made the announcement on Wednesday, marking a significant setback for the Trojans' upcoming season.

Arenas, the son of former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas, was a five-star recruit who graduated high school a year early to join USC. Known for his scoring prowess, Arenas scored over 3,000 points in just three high school seasons, setting a CIF LA City Section record. He was also a McDonald's All American.

USC head coach Eric Musselman expressed his support for Arenas, stating, "Alijah is a tremendous worker, teammate, competitor, and person. He is understandably disappointed that he will not be able to take the court to start the season, but his health is our No. 1 priority. We have no doubt that he will come back even stronger. We look forward to supporting him during this process."

This injury comes after a tumultuous year for Arenas, who was involved in a car crash in April. The incident occurred when he lost control of his Tesla Cybertruck, which crashed into a tree and caught fire. Arenas managed to escape with the help of bystanders but was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation. He was released less than a week later without major injuries.

Arenas had recently made his practice debut earlier this month, raising hopes for his immediate impact on the team. He was expected to start on USC's perimeter alongside transfers Rodney Rice (Maryland) and Chad Baker-Mazara (Auburn). His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the Trojans prepare for the 2025-2026 NCAA basketball season.

Despite this setback, Arenas' resilience and talent suggest a strong comeback. Fans and teammates alike will be eagerly awaiting his return to the court.
