The Philadelphia Eagles took a significant step in their 2025 NFL season preparations as they donned full pads for the first time in training camp. Rookie linebacker Jihaad Campbell, a first-round pick from Alabama, wasted no time making his presence felt. In a standout moment, Campbell showcased his instincts, speed, and physicality by delivering a hard hit on tight end Dallas Goedert during a drill.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio expressed optimism about Campbell's progress, stating, "I do see him making small strides every day... and if he can keep making those strides, I think he'll be what we had hoped he would be." This moment highlighted the early stages of Fangio's revamped defense taking shape.

However, several areas of the defense remain unresolved. The secondary, in particular, is undergoing experimentation. Fangio has rotated rookie Andrew Mukuba and third-year player Sydney Brown into the starting spot opposite Reed Blankenship. Mukuba, who was expected to secure the role, is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury. Fangio has also been testing standout nickel corner Cooper DeJean at safety in base packages and plans to give him reps at outside corner.

DeJean, embracing the challenge, said, "I love a challenge. I did it a little bit in college, switching back and forth. The coaches are going to do what's best and put me where they think I fit best within the defense, and I trust them in doing that."

The Eagles' defense, which led the league in passing yards allowed per game (174.2) and ranked second in points per game (17.8) in 2024, faces the challenge of replacing key contributors like Brandon Graham, Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Darius Slay. The competition for Slay's old spot on the outside is heating up, with Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson splitting reps. Ringo has shown improvement after a rocky start, while Jackson has been consistent.

Fangio issued a public challenge to Jackson, saying, "In Tennessee, when it came time to re-sign him after his contract was up, they didn't. The Giants, his contract was up, they didn't. It's time to show who he is or who he isn't."

Depth at edge rusher behind Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt remains a concern, with Joshua Uche and Azeez Ojulari yet to fully establish themselves. Meanwhile, Moro Ojomo, projected to replace Williams at defensive tackle, has generated buzz with his consistent penetration into the backfield. Left tackle Jordan Mailata praised Ojomo, comparing his ability to Micah Parsons and predicting he will be "special."

With emerging talents like Jalen Carter, Quinyon Mitchell, and DeJean, the Eagles' defense has the potential to build on its 2024 success. However, several positions must be solidified before the unit can be deemed fully ready for the challenges of the 2025 NFL season.
