Belmont Stakes to Continue at Saratoga Through 2026: A Historic Triple Crown Tradition
The Belmont Stakes will remain at Saratoga Race Course for a third consecutive year in 2026, maintaining its legacy as a key event in the Triple Crown series.

The Belmont Stakes, one of the most prestigious events in horse racing, is set to continue its tenure at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York for a third consecutive year in 2026. This decision, announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York Racing Association (NYRA), marks a significant chapter in the storied history of the Triple Crown finale.
David O'Rourke, NYRA president and CEO, emphasized the temporary nature of this move, stating, "Saratoga has served our fans and stakeholders extremely well as the temporary home of the Belmont Stakes during the construction of a new Belmont Park on Long Island. Belmont Park will always be the home of the Belmont Stakes, and we look forward to its return to the newly reimagined Belmont in 2027."
This extension allows for the completion of a nearly half-billion dollar renovation project at Belmont Park, which is on track to reopen in September 2026. The Breeders' Cup is also scheduled to return to New York at Belmont Park in the fall of 2027, further cementing its status as a premier venue for horse racing.
In a departure from tradition, the Belmont Stakes will continue to be run at 1 1/4 miles instead of its traditional 1 1/2 mile distance, known as the "test of the champion." This adjustment has been in place for the past two years due to the configuration of the main dirt track at Saratoga.
The Belmont Stakes remains a cornerstone of the Triple Crown, a series that includes the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Its temporary relocation to Saratoga has allowed fans to experience the race in a unique setting, while preserving the integrity and excitement of this historic event.
As the countdown to 2026 begins, horse racing enthusiasts can look forward to another thrilling chapter in the Belmont Stakes' storied legacy at Saratoga Race Course.
