Record-Breaking Performances at the Rocket Classic: Roy and Potgieter Dominate

Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter set a new record at the Rocket Classic with stunning 10-under 62s, leading the tournament with flawless performances.

Record-Breaking Start at the Rocket Classic

Kevin Roy and Aldrich Potgieter made history at the Rocket Classic, each shooting a remarkable 10-under 62 to break the tournament's 18-hole record. Their flawless performances set the stage for an exciting competition at the Detroit Golf Club.

Flawless Rounds

Potgieter, a 20-year-old South African who grew up in Australia, started strong with a 7-under 29 on the back nine, setting a new tournament record. Roy, a seasoned 35-year-old golfer, matched Potgieter's score with an eagle and eight birdies in a bogey-free round.

Key Moments

On the 578-yard, par-5 17th, Roy's drive went 300 yards, followed by a 288-yard second shot. His chip from the rough rolled in from 30 feet, showcasing his precision and skill. "Just one of those days everything was clicking," Roy said. "I was shocked my 5-wood went that far. I had 279 pin. I don't hit a 5-wood that far, but maybe a little adrenaline or something going on."

Strong Competition

Despite their record-breaking performances, Roy and Potgieter face stiff competition. Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman, and Mark Hubbard are just one stroke behind, each matching the previous tournament record of 63. Two-time major champion Zach Johnson is among seven players two shots back.

Course Conditions

Detroit Golf Club has been one of the easiest courses since the PGA Tour made it an annual stop in 2019. Recent rains have made the greens even more receptive, contributing to the low scores. "It was pretty easy," Andrew Putnam said after a 64.

Player Insights

Lee expressed his excitement about the course, contrasting it with the challenging conditions at Oakmont during the U.S. Open. "I was really excited for this week," he said. "I wanted to get to hit in the rough and actually hit onto the green. Hopefully, the PGA Tour can have more courses like this. It would be a bit more fun and less stressful."

Looking Ahead

With nine of the top 50 players in the world competing, including fifth-ranked Collin Morikawa, the Rocket Classic promises thrilling moments. Morikawa, who parted ways with his caddie for the second time this year, opened with a 69. KK Limbhasut, a teammate of Morikawa's at California and a Korn Tour Ferry player, is filling in as a caddie this week.

Ryder Cup Buzz

Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, who rose to No. 7 in the world after winning the Travelers Championship, shot a 68. The idea of Bradley playing at Bethpage Black in New York for the Sept. 28-30 matches against Europe is gaining traction among American players and fans.

As the Rocket Classic continues, all eyes will be on Roy and Potgieter to see if they can maintain their lead and make further history.
