Ferrari's Hypersail Project: Revolutionizing Sailing with Cutting-Edge Technology

Ferrari ventures into sailing with the Hypersail project, blending racing tradition with innovation, set to launch in 2026.

Ferrari's Hypersail Project: A New Era in Sailing

Ferrari has officially announced its entry into the world of sailing with the Hypersail project, led by renowned Italian yachtsman Giovanni Soldini. This ambitious initiative aims to merge Ferrari's rich racing heritage with groundbreaking technological advancements.

The Vision Behind Hypersail

The Hypersail project is centered around the development of the world's first 100-foot monohull ocean racing yacht, featuring a foil on the keel. Designed by French naval architect Guillaume Verdier, the yacht is currently under construction at a secret location in Italy, with a scheduled launch in 2026.

Ferrari's Racing Legacy

Ferrari Chairman John Elkann emphasized that the project aligns perfectly with Ferrari's tradition, drawing inspiration from their Hypercar, which has triumphed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times. "Designing a yacht for offshore racing is perhaps the ultimate expression of endurance," Elkann stated.

Technological Innovations

The prototype yacht will boast three points of contact to stabilize its flight, including a canting keel to support one of the foils. Additionally, it will be the first yacht in the world to be entirely energy self-sufficient, showcasing Ferrari's commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Leadership and Team

Italian Sailor Giovanni Soldini, a veteran with over 30 years of experience in solo and crewed ocean competitions, is at the helm of this project. Soldini aims to keep the crew as small as possible, ideally between eight and twelve members, to enhance efficiency and performance.

Future Competitions

While neither Elkann nor Soldini disclosed specific competitions the yacht might enter, they emphasized the importance of completing the development phase first. "Before setting sport targets, we want to finish what we're doing, developing the boat and bring it to sea. Then we'll see what we can and cannot do," Soldini explained.

Investment and Development

Ferrari has not revealed the exact cost of the project, but Chief Financial Officer Antonio Picca Piccon assured that the investment is planned and will not significantly impact capital expenditure. The development team includes 20 full-time workers, with an additional 80-90 individuals contributing to the project.

Conclusion

The Hypersail project represents Ferrari's bold step into the world of sailing, combining their racing expertise with cutting-edge technology. As the launch date approaches, the sailing community eagerly anticipates the unveiling of this revolutionary yacht.
